Ernest Hemingway attended the San Fermin Festival for the first time in July of 1923 and was fascinated by it, and actually returned 8 times after his visit. In 1926 Hemingway wrote a novel called The Sun Also Rises, which introduced more people to the festival, and many people visit it today due to his novel and wanting to retrace his steps!

Who is Saint Fermin?
Saint Fermin is the Patron Saint of Pamplona and is believed to be the first Bishop in the 3rd century. He traveled to Amiens, France to spread Christianity and was martyred there. His property was eventually brought back to Pamplona and his support only grew from there leading to the creation of the San Fermin Festival, which is meant to be a tribute to him and a celebration of his life.
